Canon City, Colorado

Canon City Colorado

Canon City is a quaint little town, about 1 hour's drive south of Colorado Springs.  The population is around 16,500. If you drive through the town on a winter's day, there may not seem like there is much going on and it may take you about 5 minutes to drive from one end of town to the other.  However, on a typical summer's day it may take you a good 15 to 20 minutes to drive through the town with the traffic. You see, in the summer, Canon City is an extremely popular tourist attraction for numerous reasons.  Aside from various festivals, craft fairs, swap meets and farmers markets alongside the highway, there are activities and sights in the area that visitors should definitely engage in.

Royal Gorge Rafting

Royal Gorge Rafting

Whitewater Rafting - The Royal Gorge is an extremely popular canyon of the Arkansas River in Canon City where hundreds of thousands of people come to raft every summer.  It is one of the most commercially rafted rivers in North America.  The Royal Gorge is also referred to as The Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River at a maximum depth of 1250 feet.  Aside from the breathtaking scenery, rafting the Royal Gorge is an unforgettable experience!  With it's huge waves and steep, powerful rapids, it boasts extreme whitewater action.

The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

Royal Gorge Bridge

The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park - Up until 2001 this bridge was the highest suspension bridge in the world.  It remains the highest suspension bridge in the US and is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.  Not only are the views gorgeous, but many added features entice guests to spend some time at the Bridge and Park and explore what it has to offer.  In June 2013 a wildfire nearly destroyed the park and most of its buildings.  The Bridge itself was unharmed and the park was fully rebuilt over a year later; emerging bigger and better.  New gondolas and a zip line going across the Royal Gorge were replaced.  They also feature the Royal Rush Skycoaster, which when harnessed-in, swings guests across the Gorge.  In addition to their activities, they also have restaurants, a gift shop and a theatre where guests can view mini-documentaries on the history of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park.

Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive Colorado

Skyline Drive - Take a quick scenic drive on a one-way, 3-mile road that was constructed in 1908 by inmate labor.  It was built on top of a razorback ridge that overlooks the town of Canon City.  You will stumble upon some cool dinosaur tracks halfway through. It can be a little hair-raising as it is a narrow road with no guard rails but you'll be glad you checked it out in the end. What's also awesome is that it's free!
