|Day 1 ≈ Arriving in Costa Rica
We will be waiting for you at the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO). After you arrive and meet your Costa Rica Adventures guides, we begin your adventure to the mountain lodge, Pochotel, on top of mountain in Turrialba valley. It will be about a 2 ½ hour ride through small towns, beautiful coffee farms, and sugar cane fields around the mountains. We will stop for lunch or dinner on the way to the lodge. When we arrive to the lodge you will enjoy the comfortable accommodations with a wonderful view of the Turrialba valley and Turrialba Volcano. We will have a delicious Costa Rican meal served at the panoramic restaurant.
Day 2 ≈ Pejivalle River
Today we will enjoy a delicious breakfast in our mountain lodge restaurant. After breakfast we will outfit you with all necessary equipment to start our first paddling day. The first river we’re going to do is class II / III on the lower section and it has about 3 rapids class IV at the upper section called Taus. This trip will be 12 miles long with spectacular jungle scenery all the way down. Lunch is prepared, riverside, by your guides. This will be a perfect river descent to warm up for the upcoming week. After paddling, we will take you for a city tour in Turrialba to go sightseeing in town for a few hours. We will then return to the lodge to relax and enjoy the beautiful view of Turrialba Valley .This evening you will enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge restaurant.
Day 3 ≈ Top and Upper-Upper section of the Pacuare River
The day begins with a healthy breakfast to get ready for this new adventure on the Pacuare River. After breakfast, we continue to the beautiful Pacuare River, which leads you through scenic tropical jungle. We will travel about 1 ½ hours to the Pacuare River canyon. There will be plenty of local birds, butterflies and wildlife to see along the way. The Pacuare River is one of the top five most beautiful rivers around the world listed in the National Geographic magazine. This section starts with nice, calm class II/III warm whitewater rapids and gets a little more difficult as we continue down in this rainforest river. The rapids are very fun and exciting. There are nice play spots along the way and two class IV rapids. Lunch is prepared, riverside, by your guides. After paddling we will return to the lodge to relax and enjoy a delicious dinner.
Day 4 ≈ Reventazón River- Power House section
The Reventazón River is a 10 mile river descent. This section is really fun and has continuous class II & III+ rapids. The Power House section is like any other river in Costa Rica with nice jungle scenery, wildlife, warm water and exciting rapids. We will stop in every play spot and have lots of fun! We will have a river lunch on along the way. After paddling, we will return to the mountain lodge to get ready for the optional horseback riding around the area. After horseback riding, we will enjoy a BBQ party at the lodge.
Day 5 ≈ Reventazón River- Pascua section
After a delicious breakfast, we will prepare for our river journey to the Pacuare River. On the way to the river we will visit the Serpentarium. The Serpentarium is a center for snake research and education in Costa Rica. Here we will listen to a brief talk on tropical snake identification and learn about other reptiles species.
We continue on the way to the Reventazón River, which has been recognized as one of the most exciting trips of Costa Rica whitewater. There are 12 miles on this section with 14 class IV and many class III rapids. You will see many exotic birds and beautiful vegetation in this jungle canyon and enjoy the amazing whitewater of Costa Rica. There are many play spots to spend the day having lots of fun! You will have a river lunch on the way down prepared by your guides. After paddling, we will return to the lodge to relax and enjoy the beautiful view of Turrialba Valley. This evening you will enjoy a delicious dinner at the panoramic lodge restaurant.
Day 6 ≈ Lower Pacuare River
Today we will have an 18 mile river descent on the Lower Pacuare River. After breakfast, we will pick you up at the lodge to begin the river action in this beautiful jungle scenic canyon. The rapids are very fun and exciting as we get splashed with the warm, clear water of this rainforest river. You will see plenty of exotic birds and wildlife along this section. We will have about 8 miles to warm up in class II/III rapids. We will then do a short hike to one of the many waterfalls that feeds the Pacuare River. Here you can take pleasure in swimming, bird watching and enjoy the amazing jungle scenery. After the hike, we will enter Huacas canyon where there will be three class IV rapids. The river then opens up to class III whitewater for about 5 miles until Simarrones, a class IV drop. Lunch is prepared, riverside, by your guides. After lunch we will continue our river descent in class II/III rapids with many play spots to enjoy the nice, warm water before we get to the take out. After paddling, we will travel for about 2 hours to Sarapiqui. We will stop at a nice restaurant to enjoy a delicious dinner along the way.
Day 7 ≈ Sarapiqui River
The day begins with a healthy breakfast to get ready for this paddling day on the Sarapiqui River. Today you will enjoy class II/III whitewater rapids with a beautiful combination of wildlife, clear water, deep pools and jungle scenery. La Virgin is the most popular run on the Sarapiqui River. Generally this is more difficult whitewater than the Lower section which only has class I/II rapids. The lower section is a perfect section to practice and improve your skills in warm water and beautiful scenery. We will have lunch on the river and spend some time swimming and relaxing along the river bank. After paddling, we will enjoy an open air sightseeing boat tour. Along the way, our captain will point out many different animals such as crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys, turtles, sloth, and many different birds. Some birds you might see on this trip include: king fishers, toucans, sun birds, tiger birds, blue herrings, hawks, and many more. This evening we will celebrate our fantastic week together during our last dinner.
*Note to kayakers
If you are an experienced kayaker, you may be able to run one of the more advanced sections of river in place of the sections listed above. Costa Rica has many chalenging rivers to paddle and enjoy for advanced whitewater kayakers.
*Upper Pacuare: The Upper Pacuare is the most difficult section of Pacuare River. This trip is a 9 mile river descent in class III, IV/V rapids. There are many technical rapids with steep drops within this jungle canyon. Hydraulic Blood, Entrance to Bobo and the Bobo Fall are the major class V rapids on this section. If you feel unsure about running the more difficult rapids you can portage around the rapids. The rest of the section is class III/IV whitewater with incredible jungle scenery, wildlife, and clear warm water.
Day 8 ≈ Departure / Drop-off
After a good breakfast, we will take you to San Jose International Airport. (SJO) Drop-off.
